At Royal Talens we are working hard to reduce our carbon footprint. We do this by lowering our energy consumption and using cleaner energy, reducing transportation, reducing our use of packaging material and waste, among other initiatives. Besides this, we are continuously improving our packaging by using recycled and/or recyclable materials. 

Electricity and transportation

One of our main focuses is on electricity. One of the things we do to reduce wasted electricity is replacing the lightbulbs we use with LED lights, several of which are equipped with motion sensors to reduce unnecessary use of electricity. The new warehouse management system in our distribution center ensures robots can pick orders more efficiently, therefore using less electricity as well.

In 2018, Royal Talens invested in 780 solar panels, the largest solar panel park in Apeldoorn. In 2018, these panels generated 167 MWh of sustainable solar energy (from March). That represents a reduction of 652,956 kg of CO2, which is equal to the annual consumption of 194 petrol vehicles driving 15,000 kilometers in 1 year.

Transportation of course has a huge impact on our carbon emission. We try to lower this by locally sourcing and purchasing our materials. This way we can tremendously lower our carbon footprint.

Materials

By selecting different materials for our packaging, we are able to lower our impact on the environment significantly. For starters, we are replacing more and more of our plastic packaging with recycled plastic – or even better, recycled cardboard. We’ve also reduced the thickness of the packaging to use as little material as possible, without compromising the quality you’ve come to expect from Amsterdam, of course.

The trays in all Amsterdam sets, for example, are made of 100% recycled plastic and are produced locally. The cardboard packaging is partially made of recycled cardboard and is 100% recyclable. Help us keep our planet clean and be sure to dispose of the packaging in the correct waste bins. By doing so, you ensure that they will be completely recycled.

Education

By informing people how to handle the paint waste after using our products, we can help each other to recycle as much as possible and dispose of the non-recyclable waste in the correct manner.

Though we still have some ways to go, as a responsible company and brand, we are making big steps towards contributing to a greener world.
